HOME & GARDEN PARTY Leads the Nation in the Fight Against Colon Cancer

Dallas, TEXAS – The American Cancer Society has named Home & Garden Party, headquartered in Marshall, Texas, the nation’s leading corporate sponsor in the fight against colon cancer. This announcement came at the company’s annual sales meeting, held in Dallas in August 2006.

With the new Give Hope campaign, Home & Garden Party’s 25,000 independent Designers will take the company’s commitment to fighting colon cancer into the living rooms of thousands of people. During hosted, private parties showcasing Home & Garden Party products, guests will be given the option to add a dollar – or more – to their orders. Each extra dollar benefits the American Cancer Society. Home & Garden Party founders Penny and Steve Carlile have pledged to match the first $50,000 raised by their company’s independent Designers.

The result is corporate support that makes a big difference. But there is more to the Give Hope campaign than just fundraising. One of the most important goals of the campaign is to create an open dialogue about an often uncomfortable subject.

“We talk about breast cancer,” says Home & Garden Party President Penny Carlile.  “We’ve become comfortable talking about prostate cancer, but our discomfort in talking about colon cancer is costing the needless deaths of thousands of men and women.”

The American Cancer Society estimates that 106,680 new colon cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2006. However, when colon cancer is found in the earliest stages, the 5-year survival rate is 90 percent, according to American Cancer Society data. Colon cancer almost always starts with a polyp – a small growth on the lining of the colon or rectum. Finding – and removing – polyps before they become cancerous is crucial. Ninety percent of all colon cancer cases are diagnosed in people older than 50 years.

“At Home & Garden Party, we want to wake people up to the reality that colon cancer testing and screening will save the lives of those they love,” Penny says.
